Being scammed can be devastating to a person and leave them with significant trauma. All mental health professionals need to be prepared with the knowledge of how this unique form of trauma occurs, to guide our clients toward healing. After taking this course, you'll have the skills to:

  • Understand psychological effects of a fraud of this nature such as emotional, cognitive, relational, and identity changes.

  • Understand the use of psychological manipulation in this type of crime that includes leveraging a person's vulnerabilities, amplifying emotions, and persuasion techniques.

  • Avoid victim-blaming language or subtle cues, learn strategies in helping clients overcome the trauma of this experience, and a detailed section on helping a person extract themselves from a scammer/criminal when at first the client does not want to accept that this is what is happening.

  • Become proficient in development of treatment plan goals, and conceptualizing treatment approaches for the healing of trauma as a result of this type of crime.

Cathy Wilson, LPC, ACS, has been in the mental health field since 2005. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Colorado and Arizona and is also an Approved Clinical Supervisor. She support clients in outpatient counseling and advocacy as well as being an author, speaker, and consultant. She has conducted Professional Will Workshops and other trainings since 2019 and has also written three books in her areas of expertise. One of these is about preparing a professional will and is titled "One Last Act: A Mental Health Clinician’s Guide to Professional Wills." Another of her books is about helping people who have been scammed and is titled "The Emotional Impact of Being Scammed and How to Recover."
